I took the reference photo right from the deck of our house in NH. I posted it on FB and got a lot of comments most of them suggesting I paint it. So I did. There were a lot of forest fires out West at the time which I am sure contributed to the drama of this sunset.

I have painted this area many times when in Maine at the cottage a fellow painter and I rent every September. For this painting, I deliberatley selected a very limited palette, inspired by some paintings of Wyeth. I think it gives the feeling of heavy humidity and fog advancing.

Weskeag River Marsh

A favorite place for plein air in Maine, this marsh is part of the Weskeag River near S. Thomaston Maine. Birdwatchers love this marsh, especially in fall.

The Inrushing Tide

One of my favorite places to do plein air near South Thomaston Maine. It is a tidal estuary and one of the biggest challenges painting there is that the tides are big and move up the small estuaries fast, in just a few hours, things are very different.
